Evidists - Framework for an evidence-based world-view to compete with archaic systems. The concept is to actively evangelize scientific reasoning to help people improve their well-being and their ability to understand their place in their world and purpose in life. This is a back-burner project that seeks further development opportunistically.
Child abuse
Jim is working on a Web or mobile conceptual framework that allows youth to self-rescue without the many complexities involved with contacting law enforcement or family or service providers who are required to contact law enforcement and family. There are currently no means that are acceptable to most youth to escape from physical or psychological abuse and very few report it. This side-project is extremely complex and since little research exists Jim is using his long experience with teens as background. This is a back-burner project that seeks further development opportunistically.
Jim has founded, co-founded, or lead almost a dozen youth groups and activities since 1962. In the late 1960's he co-founded Drug Crisis Intervention in San Jose, a call-in center for drug overdoses with a non-law enforcement model. DCI was also used by the public for non-drug problems such as suicides.
All of the issues below are very real fears that prevent the reporting of all types of child abuse. Any system of self-rescue for children must consider these issues. Western culture is becoming more accepting of this information but still a long way to go.
- Adults and friends don't recognize the plea - fear of disbelief.
- Friends know but don't know what to do or advise. Advice such as "go to the police" is far too traumatic.
- Embarrassed, shame and holds pain / fear / issues inside.
- Wife fears economic, social, community, family consequences of jail time for husband. Law enforcement destroys the victims also. Hardly family friendly.
- Reluctance to seek help as a personality or cultural trait.
- Self guilt.
- Self denial.
- Fear of punishment.
- Lack of adequate cultural and community acceptance. Where to turn for help? What will be the consequences?
- Protect the offender.
- Asian concept that if something bad happens it is the victim's fault. The victim caused the abuse with their behavior.
- Confusion.
- Fear of losing friends, family. For a real story in the San Jose Mercury News.
- Fear of not being liked.
- Fear of injury for self or loved one.
The solution must:
- Be widely accessible such as on cell phones and the Web.
- Find a way around the abuser blocking the child's access to the solution.
- Filter out the wachos and opportunitists. Validate real victims early in the process.
- Communicate clearly safe paths to resolution.
- Involve multiple tracts that are appropriate for the victim's circumstances.
- Not report directly to law enforcement until the situation requires that approach.
The conceptual framework should include:
- The use of service organizations such as Rotary to staff the solution and provide first tier validation.
- Scripts for staff that are developed by experts from a variety of services such as universities, churches, social services, and police.
- Multiple tracts available to the reporting party for response customization.
- Processes that don't add to the workload of existing services and preferably reduce the load.
- An on-going campaign to educate the masses what to look for and the options available.
- Processes to consolidate existing methods to save time and money.
- Zero additional financial burden on taxpayers.
